I just purchased a wireless G router and a wirless G card. I have three machines (nt, 2000, 98). I have hardwired the nt and 2000 boxes with no problems. I am having a lot of problems getting my windows 98 box to work with my wmp54g card. I loaded windows 98 about 2 and 1/2 years ago and then moved, so I have just recently unpacked the machine and got it going again. I have a sound card, which I disabled in Devices.

Basically, I have 2 issues...

The setup program keeps crashing after I put in the SSID and accept the license agreement. Second, once the card is installed, it locks up windows upon a restart. I must go into safe mode and remove the device and physical card and then reboot.

I guess what I'm looking for is any knowledge of known 98 issues (i've seen other forums where users are having a lot of issues with the wireless G cards and 98). I'm basically trying to decide whether I should just go to 2000 on the machine and forget about it. I would like to stay with 98 because my kid has a lot of stuff on the machine that works just fine...I'm just looking to share a modem and a couple of printers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Win98 or is Win98 SE?

I thought the device was only supported on SE.

In my experience your problem is either:

1. An IRQ conflict. Try different PCI slots for the device; or,

2. A defective card. Install it in the 2000 machine to see if it will work there.

Or both situations could be true.
Testing the card in a different box, and with Win2k it is unlikely an IRQ conflict would arise, will help your rule out at least the hardware as an issue.

This may well have nothing to do with Windows 98SE - it may be the PC.

The Linksys WMP54G is VERY fussy about what version of PCI slot it is used in. Linksys tell me that it will only work with PCI v2.2.

I haven't been able to find out how you can tell what the PCI version number is since it doesn't appear to be mentioned in the manuals for any of the MoBos I have tried.

Personally I have given up with this card - sorry . . .
