Hi!
Gateway Laptop with VISTA Premium which I have had for almost 2 years (working great - no complains)

This sounds so strange.
Yesterday all my networking connections were working fine on thsi laptop. In fact built-in Wireless is what I use almost all the time. I have never had any problems with it.

All of the sudden today, I cannot connect to Internet, using either connection (LAN or Wireless). Details for both show 169.xx.xx.xx address with Limited connectivity status.

My other laptop and desktop systems connected to the same network through Wireless as well as LAN cable are working fine.

Anything obvious I should check for. I have not installed or done anything to the system. This is the first time I have experienced on VISTA

Try pulling the power source from your wireless router and leave it unplugged for about a minute. Then plug it back in and see if your Gateway laptop can connect after the router has fully booted.

Did all of that standard stuff early this morning.
Power off everything and let it sit for quite q while. Boot everything up in an orderly fashion.

As I mentioned, I am on that same router and hub connected to Internet sending this message.

We had power outage at 5:00AM this morning, but all my systems were powered off garcefully last night.

I just connected direct cable connection the the LAN port, bypassing router and hubs. Same issue with VISTA.

It almost seems to me that TCP/IP protocol stack is not even loading/corrupted. Whatever it is, it points to OS. I do not want to do a rebuild just because of that.

Have you used the diagnose and repair options available via Vista for faulty connections, to access that, right-click the Network icon near the clock?

The standard Winsock fix built in to Vista is to launch a Command Prompt as an Administrator. To do so right-click on the Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator. Type Netsh Winsock Reset at the prompt.

Other things you can look at is faulty hardware on the machine concerned, such as wireless cards etc.

Try System Restore to get back to before the problem.

Did you restrict the number of computers that are allowed to connect on the router, or in other words, tweak the DHCP range to a small number?

Since it is a laptop, double-check connectivity on another network if possible (even if it means going to the nearest StarBucks). It's still possible from your explanation that something funky is going on with the router.

I know you said you tried a "direct cable connection the the LAN port", but what did you connect directly to? The ISP's modem? I'm not sure what you mean by getting around the router and hubs. The ISP modem is probably not set to use DHCP, so connecting directly to it probably wouldn't have given you an IP address depending on your configuration.

hmmm! READ WHOLE POST BEFORE YOU START>>>>
OK first lets do some stuff to get the machines happy again
follow these directions first:
this is the same but with some add info:
here is an article on the DNS catches:
this article is a bit advanced but something to read:

this is for the winsock2 fixes:

this is for ipconfig:

OK now...do you have Norton or McAffees? they can cause your issues...is your firewall allowing the network to share?
Run SpyBot for malware that can change your settings

post if any of the fixes above fixed your issue?
