wireless adapter to router

Hi,

(I'm norwegian with norwegian XP, so please excuse the poor translation)

I'm trying to help out my friends, using a Netgear wg311t wireless adapter to connect to a Dell Wireless 2350 router.

It claims to be connected to the network. But when checking the status of the connection, under "Adress type" it says "invalid IP adress", and the IP adress and subnet mask are both 0.0.0.0

The (stationary) comp's fairly new, still hasn't been connected to the internet, runs no AV and is set to receive ip and dns server adress automatically.

There are three other XP computers connecting with Dell Wireless 1450 USB adapters and no problems, plus a number of different laptops, also without problems.

I'm thinking it might be some kind of compatibility issue, I've reinstalled the card a few times.

This is not my field of expertise, and I'd be very grateful for any help!

Hmmm,

I've tried moving one of the USB adapters that work on the other comps, but get the exact same problem (no IP or DNS).

Any suggestions?

I take it that the adapter is installing correctly?
Are there any messages in the event logs regarding the device?
Can you see any indications in the device manager that the device didn't load correctly?

Have you checked on your router that you haven't exceeded any limits placed on it (for instance allocated addresses?) does the router use WEP encryption? Have you tried running the cards utility software to see if it see's the wireless network?

It turned out the computer had crashed a while ago, and some kind of DNS/DHCP error message had accompanied very strange sounds from the processor.

I looked at the "services" of the "administrative tools" (from norwegian) in control panel, and it turned out that both the DHCP and DNS clients were set to manual. I set them back to automatic and that solved it.

The crash and the error message sounded strange to me though, so I guess I'll just reinstall windows to be sure...
