Hello,

I am a network newbie, so bare with me. I setup a wireless router here at work and everything works great thats within range. I wanted to get internet access in our store computers so I bought a wireless access point because that is what I was told that I should get. We already have a wire in there that is running from the wireless router. So I plugged that wire into the access point and my laptop is showing a seperate network with perfect signal that I guess is coming from the access point. So, if I bring my laptop into range between the wireless router and the access point it shows that I have two networks available to connect to. Is it really just one network or do I have to do something to combine them into one. Thanks in advance.

Nick

You need to specify them to use the same SSID.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

How do I do that? I can only access the setup page of the wireless router. Thanks in advance

How far are the store computers from the wireless router?
Is it possible to position the router midway?(eliminate the access point).

[Cheers]

Not really because the store is like a tin building. For example, when you go in with your cell phone you automatically lose reception. So it needed something extra. Any suggestions? The access point gives me a full strength signal but its coming up as a seperate network. I just need to know how to combine both if possible. Thanks

Here's what I've done with mine:
(assuming you've connected the LAN port of the Access point to one of the LAN ports of the router)

1 - go into setup page of router and check the ip & subnet mask of your router. It probably is 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.1 and subnet is 255.255.255.0.

Also check the auto assign IP range of the DHCP server of router.

2 - go into setup page of access point, change the SSID to something other than that of the router (so that you can tell which one you're connecting to). Make sure the IP range is the same as the router. ie the first 3 groups of numbers are the same and same subnet mask numbers.
Assign an ip address outside the auto assign IP range of the DHCP of the router.

Also turn the DHCP server on the Access point off.

3 - connect your laptop to the access point through wireless. If it cannot get an IP address then set its IP to be 1 higher than the access point (the 4th group of number)and the default gateway to the ip addrss of the router.

4- Try to access the internet and see if it works. Get back to us if you have problems.

5 - If it works, then set up your security for the access point.

How do I do that? I can only access the setup page of the wireless router.

I don't mean to be calus or rude, but you just purchased the Access Point so READ THE MANUAL.

Unless you got a hold of some third world device with a manual in sanscrit you should be able to easily determine what the IP is of the WAP so you can manage it by reading the documentation that came with the device.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Ok,

First off, defintely went over the manual. But thanks for the reminder. Tekuser got me straight. Thanks Buddy.
