I post on a few different DIY forums, and I have noticed that people constantly say "wire it up" when referring to connecting electrical wires to devices. It drives me nuts. Unless you are talking about running a wire vertically, you are simply "wiring" it.

Any other examples or pet peeves similar to this? So much grammar could be corrected by simply omitting superfluous words that don't need to be there. (yeah, that one was on purpose [bigglasses])

Thanks,
Andrew

To be honest"

Why, are you a constant liar and only now you decide to tell the truth?

Robert Wilensky:
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

Sympology,

Nit picking but, it's an infinite amount of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters.

kwbMitel - I believe you'll find that Sympology is correctly quoting Robert Wilensky.

Oh, didn't catch that part. Thanks CC, Sorry Sympology. Guess my beef is with RW.

Well, a million monkeys may not have reproduced the works, but I believe that one guy with a scanner did. =)

It took a while but I finally understand what SantaMufasa said. It became clear when looking for other examples in the same vein.

Wire it up
give it up (Definitely changes meaning by removing up)
hold it up (the bank that is)
throw it up (well, up may actually apply in this case)
Ham it up
rough it up

Suffice it up (joke) the english language is very complicated.

kwbMitel - shut it up! [wink]
