Hello,

What is the best way to wipe a SUN disk clean
so it cannot be accessed again? I have a client who wishes to blow away the data on his drives, before it goes back to SUN, so when it is resold, the data will not be accessed "accidentally". Is there a script somewhere or one of SUN's utiility tools?

Thanks!

You can do newfs on that drive. It will clear all data you have in the drive.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering this:
Does newfs destroy the data within the blocks or does it just destroy the header information? Since the information is sensitive, we do not want any third party using an application to string the application data blocks back together to read the info.

Thanks!
Chris

Try this, dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/dsk/c?t?d?s2 bs=32K,
you write only zero's on the disk.
Do it for 3 times, and nobody can read the disk again.

Attention, dd runs very long time.

Regards Gruef

This works great, although it takes some time, there is nothing left on the disk, that is readable. Thanks much!
