Have just installed the Sys Guard 3 front-of-case fan/temp monitor with a 6-in-1 card reader and optional front- facing USB and Firewire ports. BUT... as soon as the drives are being recognised by O/S, Win XP (Pro) black screens and reboots, and will do so until the pass-through case USB cable (which presumeably provides the card reader connections) is removed from a USB port. It also creates the MS 'System has recovered from a Serious error' message. Have D/Lded the latest MS WinXP USB 2 driver and the manufacturers usb drivers and installed them prior to connecting up the device. Still no joy. I know some of these 6-in-1 readers can be a little flaky. Any help would be greatly appreciated guyz.

For HP machines there is a patch. Let me know. It is easily found in a Google of Groups.

It is a BIOS issue, the firewire ports are the problem, and you may find yourself out of luck on this one. Move the PCI to a different slot. Hope you have a generous return allowance at your local shop.

Motherboard Monitor, excellent freeware, can give you temperature and fan reports.
If you really need all of these things on your computer, my own advice is to sell the old one and buy one with at least the USB and firewire ports built in. Then add the cardreader. Many printers (need an upgraded printer?) now include this function.

But all in one is master of none. I have never had a good experience with such a complex board in any OS, Windows, Linux or DOS.

Many thanks bcastner, I was hoping you'd respond! (and congrats on this months 'award' - Wow! that's some record!)

This is a brand-new, self-built, top-of-the-range PC and the 6-in-1 card reader/fan/speed/temp-monitor/front-facing usb/firewire/and audio ports in ONE device was just too good to miss out on and it was the only device I didn't have! Maybe, as you say, 'but it's master of none...'.

I (successfully!) flashed the mobo BIOS last week (an MSI 875P (Canterwood) Neo-FIS2R) and of course, there are other USB and Firewire ports built onto the rear of that mobo - I really just wanted to have a couple of USB/firewire ports on the front of the case as the whole PC goes deep into a work station.

There are no PCI slots involved as the unit slips into the top drive bay and is powered by a 4-pin Molex power connector.

Would have thought that the latest USB 2.0 driver, which I think came with Service pack 1, would have pre-empted any of these problems.

Have just tried again and as soon as the USB cable, which presumably powers the card reader, is connected to one of the rear USB ports, the OS recognises and begins to load the various drives THEN... suddenly crashes and re-boots. I just think it HAS to be something 'obvious' which I'm missing. Please have a re-think for me !!!

Can you free up any IRQs? Some serial ports you do not plan to use?

My other thought was that if the temperature monitors use some older reserved ports to read the fan, temps, etc. they can easily lock you up big time. A good resouce, (if not an alternative to the Beast you bought) is Motherboard Monitor. You want to read the Help and tech notes, if not visit their Forum:

Thanks again bcastner for the qwik response although I must get me to bed soon (it's after 02.30AM here).

Have already disabled COM Port 2 to free upan IRQ (any others U can suggest) and the temp monitors are simple temp sensors that stick to the CPU HSF and HDD.

Will try that MS KB page in the morning.

The Event log always halts at the same point (NOT surprising!) and the last file to be loaded is the MS wescodec.sys file although i don't have much expertise in interpreting these logs.

I feel sure that the solution to this will prove to be 'simple' as the drives are all recognised and all but loaded before the crash. The device itself is from Taiwan (of course) and can be seen at if ur curious.

Thanx again bcastner for your excellent input to date.

Update: (for bcastner primarily) Have D/L that Ms KB Hotfix patch as mentioned and then un-installed and re-installed drivers for this device.

Alas with same result. When the device is connected up on a reboot, the drives are found by WinXP which then black-screens and reboots giving the MS 'System has recovered from a serious error/problem'.

I wonder if there is an internal wiring fault in the actual unit? Unlikely I know...

The only thing that matters in that unit is its role as an USB hub, and possibly as a Firewire hub.

Everything else Windows should not care about.

Let look at the USB issue, as I strongly suspect that this is the problem. Unplug the firewire and USB attachments to this device. Does the problem resolve itself? If so, look carefully at these MS KB articles:

Excellent selection of MS KB articles bcastner. I feel sure you are on the right track. Will go through them all one-by-one. (I see lots of similar problems listed on the manufacturers website forum - but no responses from the Company...)

Thanks once again for all your efforts on my behalf.

bcastner Should I have a separate entry for USB 2.0 ECHI in the Device Manager?

I downloaded and installed the updated WinXP USB 2.0 a few days ago but don't see an entry listed...

BTW, I already have the very latest chipset drivers available. I await your words of wisdom - as always.

Just don't load any drivers for this device and make sure you uninstall any you have already loaded.
All the front 6in1's I have ever fitted work just fine on generic drivers, XP with SP1
I know what you're thinking, it can't be as simple as that? well it probably isn't but give it a go.

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Many thanks Martin - but I already tried that first time around the block. As you say, normally these 'simple' devices are just 'picked up' (like pen drives etc).......
AND JUST WORK!!! Thanks for the thought anyway!

Update: Thanks Guyz for all your help so far - particularly bcastner. Who, if you read this last post, can you tell me if YOUR Device Manager has a separate entry for a USB 2.0 EHCI controller listed. A friend of mine says he's seen an entry on a colleagues' PC.

Have just had a response from the technicians at the Taiwan manufacturers of the unit who have requested all my technical hardware details. And since you may be curious...

New MSI 875P (ICH5) Neo-FIS2R (with latest - 08/09/03 - BIOS version 1.8). CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 3Ghz (800Mhz).
RAM: Corsair Twin Xtreme (matched) 2x512Mb 3200 DDR and a ATI Radeon (All-in-Wonder) 9700 Pro graphics card.
O/S: Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 - and Microsoft USB 2.0 driver USB2.0_5.1.266.0_WinXP_EHCI.exe.
