WinXP Pro SP2 Fails Install

I have tried to install SP2 4 times without success, each time I get message, "Successful Upgrade, Reboot" and thats where it fails. Boot gets up to WinXP splash screen, then "blue screens" and reboots. Each time I have been able to boot into the Safe Mode and uninstall SP2. This last time I removed everything I could think of, including the video driver.

Computer is Gigabyte GA7N00S-L, AMD 2600XP, 512mb ram, 80gb WD HD, WinXP Pro SP1 with all the current upgrades.

As a side note I put a "clean" 40gb drive in this hardware and did WinXP install and immediately did a SP2 upgrade and it worked, so I am fairly certain its not hardware.

Now that I think of it, I left Norton AV 2002 running during the SP2 install, but I have done SP2 installs at work without removing Nortons or anything else and they were successful.

Have been to the M$ site about the reboot problem, but no joy there. Thinking I maybe doomed to a complete backup of the application stuff and a reinstall of Win XP from scratch.

Anyone have any thoughts??

John

Disable any antivirus/antispyware/pop up blockers or anything of that nature. Then install sp2. Let us know the outcome.

Even though it worked with the clean drive, what processor does this machine have?

Steve

You have to have all hardware upgrades to run SP2. That's the most common failure. You could also try running it in Safe Mode without all drivers running.

Nevermind my earlier question, I missed that in your original post. Is there any error message contained in the blue screen?

Steve

Dglienna - The hardware is up to snuff on bios upgrades and I was able loaded the drivers for video, etc after I got the SP2 loaded on the clean drive install.

Smah - No error message, just goes "blue screen" then the system reboots.

Will take a chance and try one more SP2 upgrade this weekend with the Norton AV turned completely off, or uninstalled. Have had my fingers crossed during the last 4 uninstalls so if it fails again I hope I have at least one more "do over"!

Thanks all for replies, will report back when I have something to report.

You could always do a Slipstream of SP2, then do a Repair Install over your current installation, then update the Hotfixes...

as a Repair installation basically over writes the system files (replaces them) with the current ones of the CD, resets certain parts of the Registry, while leaving all your installed programms intact...

Get rid of nortons and you should be ok, you will have to manually edit the registry as nortons leaves most of the hooks in place.

Hello all,

Sorry for the delay, but work and home life have disrupted testing a reload of SP2.

I tried SP2 install for 5th time this weekend and altho it failed I now now why. I did remove Nortons NAV and it was still crash/rebooting after the install.

I finally woke up and did a F8 to set a "boot w/o restart on system failure". Got a BSOD message that the UMAXDRV.SYS was causing the problem! I have a very old Umax 1200S scanner on the system which does work under XP SP1, but is not cohabitable with SP2. I did a search on net and found that I am not the first to discover this. It looks like I need to move the scanner over to one of my Win98 machines!

Thanks to all for suggestions and help, and again sorry for the delay in reply.

No worries...

glad you found the answer to your problem... without that info, it was all guesswork, as the PC was not sitting in front of us to dissamble...

good job and thanx for the update...
