Scenario:
2 x winxp pro machines (sp2) & (virus and spam free), connected to a netgear 5 port switch and satellite modem/router. Both machines have Sygate Personal Firewall installed. Both machines are approximately 2 years old with realtek NIC's. Both are set to automatically receive IP's etc, ip address, workgroup and subnet mask are reported correctly. Both run filemaker pro (used as business software solution) one as host, the other as guest. The most recent addition was the installation of the satellite modem (by a telco, not us). The following problem started gradually about a month later.
To further clarify, the filemaker pro "host" is having no problems, the "guest" is .. well ... dying network-wise.
Problem:
Both computers are turned on at the same time every morning. (host first). In the last 2 months, the guest computer constantly drops its connection on the network and the following event id's occur; 8032 - browser, 1000 - DHCP, 1003 - DHCP (unable to get backup list, unable to renew ip etc).
These errors NOW occur every hour for three hours. Then it tries to lull us into a false sense of security and gives it a break for two hours, and then falls back into the same pattern again destroying all our hopes and dreams into the bargain. The error started occasionally, maybe once or twice during the day. Todays count was 9 groups of these 3 event id's.
Unsuccessful attempts at resolving issues:
1. Replaced network cable
2. Updated drivers on NIC
3. Replaced NIC
4. Moved cat5 cable to another working port on switch.
5. Replaced switch
6. Pulled out copius amounts of hair and prayed
7. Disabled firewall & anti-virus software
The problem can be replicated without Filemaker Pro running so we have ruled it out of the equation.
Any ideas would be most welcome.
