Folks,

I have run into a problem and can't find a way out of it. Recently, my PC was infected with "Antivirus 2008" virus and the pc was totally wrecked. I was able to get it out and was able to revive it to normal. The only problem I still have and could not figure out is that when I open "My Computer" to browse the drives, nothing shows up on the right side of the window. But, I can use the explore function to see/browse all drives. Anyone has a suggestion how to fix this. I hate to reinstall windows all over again.

Cheers

What is it like from Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode, but as a different user? Maybe your Profile has been corrupted?

Try resetting back to "Restore Defaults" via Folder Options/ View. Use the other options available in View to set up a folder view and apply it to all folders.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks for the post linney.
I checked the "restricted user" account that I have, other than the "Administrator" one and same issue there as well.
Haven't checked it in safe mode..will do that tonight.
Running Scandisk didn't do any good. Will try chkdsk too..Running system file checker is a good idea, will try that as well. If all failed and I had to run window setup on existing installed windows, I presume I will have to re-install all my softwares all over again??? Updates is not a huge issue..

Cheers

The only thing you will have to re-install are Windows Updates, and only those that are later than versions of files on your repairing XP CD. Programs will not be touched, at least unless something unusual occurs, which you can never give a 100% guarantee against, but 99.999% of people don't have any problems, are you feeling lucky?
