I've tried this before and it worked for me:
Try runnning word in troubleshooting mode, if it opens the document then it could be that the normal.dot file is corrupt or a macro causing problems.
To run Word in safe mode:
click start then go to run and type in "Winword.exe /a" (minuse the " "
this will open word without any macros etc running.
Try opening your file, if it opens - great, if not - hmmm
if it does open up, then you can delete the normal.dot file and start word normally, this will create a new normal.dot
if it still doesn't open the file, make sure that that is the only file it is happening to. it might be an idea to open the file on a system that works and re-save it with another name, then open it again on the suspect system. this sometimes works.
