Has anyone seen this Program Error message before?

"WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created."

I have tried several methods such as uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2K, Svc packs 1 & 2 but the error message still occurs.

Can anyone help with resolving this issue? Or at least point me in the right direction where to research the issue with specific links. I have tried several solutions on MS Knowledge Base but none of them seem to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you tried first renaming the normal.dot file and letting it rebuild it self to see if that is the possible cause.

You can also try to start Word from the RUN line using the /a switch.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /a

This starts Word without the normal template or add-ins. If Word opens with no error then it is not a problem with the Word program but rather something else it is loading when it starts.

After a few days of pulling my hair out (and I can't afford that), I found a solution. Check out Microsoft bulletin Q290771.
I started winword with the /a switch, and it came up ok. Then I went to c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup and deleted all of the files in the folder. I restarted my computer and Word came up normally. I hope this helps you guys.

Hey, i have office 97 and i have this same problem. I tried everything that was listed here, what was listed at microsoft, listed at norton antivirus, and any other webpage that talked about this. None of them worked. Especially the one with normal.dot, becuase i didnt have that file for some unknown reason. I fixed it by copying the normal.dot file from my friends computer and put it where it is supposed to be. And for some reason that fixed it. Hope this helps someone.

I was having the same problem. I loaded the service packs.....I reinstalled...I repaired it. Nothing seemed to work. Mick's idea of deleting everything from c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup did the trick.

I hope this helps someone else having this problem.

The trick opening "c:\program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /a helped in determining that the problem was with Word and not something else

I got this problem just with one document. I fixed it by selecting everything in the document, except for a Section Break at the end, and then copying and pasting my selection into another document.

I am having the same problem with Excel. Will this also work for Excel?
