I hooked the serial port of my computer up to the adapter, and had a straight through regular network cable going to the admin port on the Merlin Legend PBX.

Inside WinSPM I set the communication to direct, with com port 1, and choose 1200 as the rate. I hit connect, and it comes back that I need to make sure I'm connected to the admin port adn the serial device is connected to my PC.

I have the older Merlin Legend mlx type. I have tried rebooting my laptop several times.

I was even going to try using a terminal emulator but did not know the settings for that so I could not connect.

Would I be unable to connect if a password was set or would I get some type error?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

what kind of adapter do you have. It must be a 355A.

Yeah.. I have the right adapter.. those adapters are also used to program routers, switches, etc... directly connected... so I have a few of them laying around and know they work.

The Adapters you have "Laying around" for use with your routers are most likely NOT 355A or 355AF adapters. The 355 has a propritary wiring scheme that is not used with anything But AT&T, Lucent, and Avaya phone systems.

Or maybe you took your routers apart and rewired the RJ45 console ports so that you could use all of those useless 355 adapters you just happen to have.

If you do a search you can find the pinouts to make your own, But use it at you own risk because they don't offer the Proection that the real ones do and you could blow out the serial port in your laptop or in the Porcessor of the phone system.
