is still still adviseable to run wins in a 2003 environment - or is it really down to clients involved

ie if you were at stage that all are 2000/xp would you install wins

advantages / disadvantages ?

The only reason that i can think of to install WINS is if you have either any older clients, or any applications that use wins to resolve names.

The main advantage of getting rid of wins is it is quicker to resolve names as you only have to query dns not dns and wins.

Hope this helps

Yeah if you're sure none of your apps need WINS then it's probably best to get rid of it, personally we can't where I work as SMS v2 and the version of McAfee we use still reference WINS (as well as a couple of other old apps).

I would add though, that it's much worse to lack it when you need it than have it when you don't.
