In work there is a clapped out NT4 server that controls user logons & stores public files, and [bearing in mind that i don't know that much about NT4] i've kinda been left on my own to 'maintain' it, cuz the boss is 'too busy',

recently theres been a few issues that confuse me:

in the System Log in Event Viewer, theres a rather alarming amount of 'Wins Errors'
"WINS encountered a JET error. This may or may not be a serious error. WINS will try to recover from it. If you continue to see a large number of these errors consistently over time (a span of few hours), you may want to restore the database from a backup."

A quick look on MSKB gave me this:

the thing that confuses me is what database is it talking about? and the server already has SP6 installed..

any ideas?

much appreciated

You can restart your WINS database. It will rebuild itself with a bit of time....

Get the list of static WINS entries that you might be entered if you can and write them down. If there are none, all the better, less work for you.

Once you've jotted them down, stop the WINS service.

Goto \WINNT\SYSTEM32\WINS and delete the files.

Restart the service and WINS should build a new database

Insert the static WINS entries.

My memory might be a little flaky, you might need to remove the WINS service (in the Networking Control Panel), then delete the database and then install it again. (Don't forget to run the service pack after).

"In space, nobody can hear you click..."

thanks for that, ill give it a go & let you know what happens...
