Winodws shuts itself OFF!!! 1

hi !!


My comp is PIII,64 MB RAM, 20 GB hdd , win 98 se ,win xp dual boot.

was workin fine till yesterday.

***Today,the computer switches itself OFF suddenly after only a few minutes of being ON..( varies..4 min - sometimes 20 etc).
Happens evertime after restart too...***


It jus switches off ! and then it restarts or sometimes it doesnt switch off but hangs.

this happens anytime - may be whn reading a doc file or on internet...

Yesterday i attached the LAN ethernet card ( DAX company). to the motherboard...but no cable connxn has been made...AND comp was fine yesterday without any prob...

I mostly use win 98 .
i checked the CPU...both the processor and SMPS (power)FAN are running...

the problem occurs in both 98 and XP.



<btw i don run any antivirus.....i used to hav NORTON 2003 b4, but it never found anything ever......so i dont have it installed..>

Could a virus actually cause this behaviour?

what could be the soln?

Albert,

- Mainboard, motherboard, mobo... they all mean the same thing.

- Mainboard manual can be downloaded from here:

- POST (Power On Self Test) just means BIOS startup.

- Red and green LED's are probably 'Power' and 'Hard Disk Activity' respectively. Next to each LED should be a picture indicating which is which.

- Temperature values you quoted are OK.

- Interesting that PC is easier to start at night and that you have a UPS. Are you sure you are getting a steady power supply during the day?

- Cleaning RAM contacts appeared to have an effect. Try shutting off power at the wall (but leave power cord plugged in so the PC is grounded [earthed]), waiting a minute for residual power to die away then gently press down on any chip on the motherboard which is stuck into a socket soldered to the motherboard (to check the chip is seated properly). This applies on particular to the BIOS chip which will have an AMI label on it.

The symptoms you describe sound like a power supply issue to me. They are classic for a slowly dying power supply. Intermittant shutdowns, freezes and the like can be caused by a faulty power supply. I'd try replacing it with the next higher wattage if possible and see if that doesn't fix your problem.

Another thing to check is to see if your CPU cooling fan is working properly. They do go out from time to time and can also cause the symptoms you describe.

Also, since you have an ATX motherboard, I would NOT leave it plugged in to "earth/ground" it as it is still supplying power to the motherboard. This can cause additional problems if you inadvertantly short something on the motherboard or associated circuitry. Granted, it is a low voltage but there is still current running through the motherboard even though it is technically off. That is why the ATX doesn't need a real switch to turn it on and off.
