I have a users ME machine. I have removed the internal modem and removed the drivers.

When I boot the machine ME says it's found a modem and installs a driver. (Modem is 2 feet away on my desk)

Any ideas?

Click START-RUN-type REGEDIT-doubleclick HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-doubleclick ENUM-doubleclick PCI, you will see some folders marked VEN, as you open each one, you will see another marked BUS*****, each one refers to a registry of a PCI device, WINDOWS is picking this info up each time it boots. Find the one that relates to your nonexistant modem and delete it (that is the folder marked BUS**** containing the modem info, do not delete any others).

Next time you boot, WINDOWS will not find or install a modem.

Hope this helps

Hmmm, had a look at that and there are no enteries in there relating to a modem.

There are also no reg enteries with the modem name or manuf. listed.

stranger and stranger. Perhaps it's hiding under the title PCI COMMUNICATION DEVICE or PROBLEM DEVICE

Phil

The only odd looking device is

AC'97 Driver for Intel(r) 82801AA Controller

driver is MEDIA\0001

Other than that I can account for the others

Forget the last post that's in integrated sounds card driver.

That's an audio device not a modem. If you can write down the modem it finds and installs, try doing a find in REGEDIT and get rid that way, alternatively get rid of ME and install 98SE.

Phil

Since you mentioned that you have intergrated sound, was this modem on a riser?? If you look in the BIOS, is there an entry for the modem? If so, disable it and try removing the device from device mgr. again.

Hope this helps, WMH

Check any modem driver from Windows Device Manager if there is a modem showing before you can install another modem driver into Windows (My Computer - Control Panel - System). Remove PCI Communication Device from category Other Device (if availabe).

Phil

Ah, The modem is part of the audio chip set on a special riser board. Once disabled in the BIOS the machine boots OK.

Thanks for everyones help.
