In a network, using windows 95, explorer 5. Some of the machines(always the same few machines) occassionally have their Explorer hang until it says page can't be displayed. The only way to get it going again, besides a restart, is to run winipcfg then, release and renew the ip address (the leases are set for 24 hrs). Even though it renews to the same ip address, Explorer will now work. In internet tools/connections/lan settings, no boxes are checked. Why do they only get the hang occassionally, and is there any way to fix it. I have also reinstalled Explorer,to no avail.

Cutting to the chase, IE 5.0 was a dog of a release -- kind of the ME of the browsers. I realize all too well that 6.0 has its own set of quirks, but I'd srongly recommend that you upgrade off of 5.0, even if just to 5.5 -- but really, I think you'd benfit moreso from 6.

These machines are runnung windows 95, which, I believe, doesn't support IE6.

i may be wrong but i believe it would be a little more than the browser. if renewing the ip config info fixes the issue it would more than likely be a renewing issue. if the upgrading browser thing doesn't fix it, try removing all uneeded components in your network properties and maybe even updating/reinstalling NIC drivers. good luck! Thanks interNETech, that sounds like a likely solution. It's a relatively new NIC, so I think I'll just remove the drivers and re-install.

Since this is affecting multiple pc's, it sounds like a DHCP server issue. Releasing/Renewing the IP touches base with the DHCP server. Check the settings there as well.

Thanks cdogg. I don't necessarilly think it's the workstations either.

you said DHCP was on a 24 hour lease. is that from your ISP or your server's dhcp? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

its not releasing the same IP's to those pc's by chance is it? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Yes, the only way to stop that is by excluding those ips at the server. Regardless, when you renew the lease, it grabs the same ip that it was hanging on,but it will work. Does this make sense?

so are you saying that a pc wil renew to the same IP? what i was asking is if all the pc's in question are being released the same IP's by chance. i'm sure they're not but that would cuase this problem if thats what it is. another thing to look at is are they able to browse the network BEFORE renewing or rebooting. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

we had a similar issue with 98 machines that needed a longer lease on the IP. at the time we extended the length of the scope to 10 days, and all problems went away. None of the NT workstations had issues, just the 9x machines.

I ran into this also and found out that it is a win 9xx issue. I found it on microsofts web site but cannot remember the link. I will look for it and post if i find it.
