Windows7 Ultimate 64bit and virtual XPMode

Hi i've just been supplied with a Dell XPS15Z laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate. I've just installed XPMode and works fine. I was trying to attach a ISDN2 modem and load the drivers(isdn2 modems are old and you can only get XP Drivers and they won't load on Windows 7 as i've tried). I get a message back saying try another USB slot or reset. i've tried both options and i can't get it to Attach. I've used a PC using Virtual XP Mode and it Attaches fine and the modem works so i can't work out why this won't work correctly. Any assistance would be most greatfull.

Hi i've just taken a look at the the 2 links. I understand and know how to attach a USB device via Virtual XPMode as i can get it to work on a different computer. I just can't get it to work on the Dell laptop and am wondering if its to do with USB 3.0? Thanks for replying and any further assistance would be great.

USB 3.0 is completely backwards compatible with all versions of USB.
Also as a test, if you think it's the USB 3.0, try the E-sata combo port, as it is USB 2.0 and run from another chip.

Have you contacted Dell Support to see if they can help you? Have you looked at their web site concerning your Dell and seen if there is any Bios Update available?

Thankyou for your reply's. I have gone through Dell's website and made sure everything is up to date to the latest releases and it has made no difference unfortunatly.
As for USB being completly backwards compatible i've found a few people having similar problems. And the fact i can get it to work on USB 2.0 with the same setup (different laptop) and not USB 3.0 makes me wonder if thats where the problem seems to be, i could be wrong.

USB 3.0 is controlled by a different chip (Renesas/NEC) than the USB 2.0 comboports, which is through the HM67 chips-set of the laptop...

and quite frankly, yes it could be the problem here, in that the VirtualPC does not know how to access the USB3.0 port or is not aware of it properly...

You could do away with XP mode and use VirtualBox - its fast and free - and I think (dont quote me on this) you can open a MS virtual PC disk image with it

ensure you install the extension pack too.

VBox will allow USB pass through.
