hello. my friend and i are both using win2k pro on a local area network. when sharing a directory for him to access across the network i cannot LOOK IN Workgroup to add permissions. i can only see my own computer in the LOOK IN field. we can both see each other in my network places, but cannot share our files. even with permissions set to everyone. i have sp3 and he's got the original installed copy. can this be the problem? plz help. thanx.

Hi,

A quick checklist. For a seamless connection:
1. usernames and passwords must match across systems.
2. Appropriate permissions must be assigned to the folders/printers under the shares if the disk is formatted as NTFS. NTFS permissions will override any specific granted to the share (ie if share says yes, but NTFS says No access, no access will be granted).

The service pack level should not matter.

what baffles me is the fact that my friend can click on the LOOK IN drop-down box to select a workgroup to look in. mine is greyed out on my own computer name.

no error msg. i cannot use the LOOK IN drop down tp browse the workgroup to add people in the permission list.

try typing \\pcname\sharedname in the address bar
for example:
my computer name is "admin" and I am sharing my "c: drive"
I will need to type in \\admin\c

If you can connect to him like that, then I'll figure out what you need to do next.
If you can't, then I will still think for you.
