I could have added my thoughts to the "Inaccessible Boot Device" thread, but so far that has only been my problem 45% of the time.

First things first. My system is as follows:

AMD Athlon 1300 Mhz
1.04 GB RAM
Asus A7- w/ Onboard ATA100 (not being used currently)
Primary IDE:
20 GB WD HDD running in 66 mode (used the WD floppy)
CD-RW
Secondary IDE:
40 GB Maxtor
CD-Rom
(the IDEs have gone back and forth during the troubleshooting. This is where they are at the moment)
32 MB NVidia GeForce2 video
Netgear FA311 NIC

Ok, onto the problemS.

1.) Trying to install Windows 2000 Server or Professional on either drive, Windows cannot complete the format. Doesn't give me any reasons. So I booted to a Windows98 startup disk and formated each drive with FAT32. Tried to install 2K again. This time, for both drives, I choose to leave the file system intact, it does a disk check, then it says "Windows has made changes to your drive that require reboot. Setup will then continue." Setup never continues. Does it over, and over, and over.

2.) If I use the ATA100 controllers and enable it on the HDD, I use F6 to load Promise drivers, but I still get "Inaccessible Boot Device" during setup, at various times.

3.) If I am ever able to get past these two problems, by luck it seems, Windows starts to copy files. So far, 2 different errors have occured.
a.) I get a BSOD with a "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED", or something like that.(The monitor I am using to install is very old, the writing is hard to read.)
b.) Or, it fails to copy MANY files from the CD. (This is the one that happens 80% of the time.) Says that "Setup cannot copy the file XXXXX.XXX" or "The file setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid setup image file". This is a genuine, legal copy of Windows used for new installs. I have 2 legal copies, 2 CDs. It happens with both CDs, on both CD-ROMs, with either HDD. I have tried every possible combo of HDDs, CD-ROMS, and Windows CDs. Same thing everytime.

I am ready to convert to linux if it wasn't for wanting to learn this .Net crap.

Any input is appreciated!!

Have you tried booting from a startup floppy and running FDISK before installing Windows 2000? I had an issue when I first installed it on my machine and it would not install properly until I did that. Also just curious, did you try it with only one hard drive installed? Hope this helps.

Yes, I have tried using either 1 or the other hard drive only. I also did an FDISK right before I used the Windows98 startup disk to format.

Your input is appreciated, Bong! ---------------------
