We have recently upgraded our Compaq ProLiant 1600 server from NT4 to 2000 by means of a fresh install. Now with 2000 server, the utilization can be very high (eg making a copy of a folder on the same drive from the server itself pushes the utilization to around 90-100% and deleting the copied folder pushes it to 100%). This did not happen with NT4. We have tried swapping out the memory with known good memory but the problem still occurs. Also, intermittently (it has happened 3 times in the last 3 weeks), the server stops responding to all requests. It can still be pinged but not seen in Network neighbourhood. The only way to solve this is to reboot the server. Nothing appears in the event log and the server has been patched with the latest Microsoft and Compaq patches and has all the latest network and video drivers installed.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Where is your pagefile located? Is the pagefile large enough, or running out of disk space in its current location?

You should check Perfomance monitor and watch for high levels of CPU/H.Drive/memory ussage.
Try to stop some services your not using, and also in task manager, watch for processes that takes too much memory or CPU. A+, MCP, CCNA

Keep fighting for your knowledge!

ampaul - the pagefile is located on another partition on the system drive. The pagefile is twice the size of physical memory installed. There is more than enough room for the pagefile (enough for 5 copies of the pagefile if I wanted to).

koquito - At one point we disabled all non essential services for the running of w2k server but this didn't help. When making a copy of the folder as described initially, the explorer.exe service takes up most of the CPU time (ranges fro 20% to 90%)

What is your performance option set to for the application response? Application or background? This may be a long shot, but whatever it is currently set to, try the other.

Also, has the server ever "Blue Screened"? If so, where was the memory.dmp file placed... Getting to the point, how much available disk space is left on the c:\ ?

My last thought is... Is this server multi-homed? If so, check your NIC configurations and/or disable all NICs except for one, and move on from there....

What speed is your processor?

How much RAM do you have?

Disk Drives?

Maybe one or the other needs to be upgraded?

ampaul - changing this setting doesn't fix it. The server hasn't blue screened yet (touch wood) and there is 1.2Gb free on the C drive. The server has only one network card in it.

uu - it was installed using smartstart to create the utilities partition and then a manual install was performed using the w2k cd

zoeythecat - server is PII 450MHz with 640Mb of memory and system drive of mirrored 9Gb drives

Thank you.

OZ,
I had a similiar problem with a Compaq box and windows NT and it was NIC related ( as well as print drivers , it was a print server ) . Replace the NIC card and see if this helps the situation. Are you running SMS ?
