I have a WD 100GB hard disk I was using for some time. I removed it to test another drive. When I reinstalled it Windows claims it needs to be formatted which of course will wipe out all my data. I did get windows defrag to run on it sucessfully. Why does it tell me it needs to be formatted if it can see data to defrag? I have over 2500 MP3 files I don't want to lose. What about NOrton utilities or Partition magic to fix it. (Its NTFS format)

Have you changed any of the jumpers on the hard drive? Make sure the drive is installed as the master drive on the IDE 1 port.

dear bschmidt ,
i assume you know abt ntfs as you are a programmer.the security descriptors on the drive will be different once you reinstall win2k or any nt based os[nt 3.5,4,xp].i have had this problem when i wanted to copy some data from my friend's hard disk.it said 'local drive' instead of e,f etc.i just rebooted in 98 and used ntfspro software on it.[it enables you to read from ntfs in win98,me].it is available on too thought at first that the hard disk was corruped.but the data was _intact_.so,dont do any thing foolish.this is what i advice you to do:
first try to correct all security descriptors by running chkdisk in 2k.[eg chkdsk /f d:]then i think your problem will be solved.next resort, try to convert ntfs to fat32 thro partition magic._never_ try norton disk doctor!it doesnt understand ntfs.if that too fails as i said pay a visit to and download ntfs98.if that too fails,if you have linux, use the ntfs driver to access your files.

sorry for this darn long reply.
hope this helps you. post message if you have any difficulty.

I have Compaq Scsi sca hard drive Model BB00911C49 (I think Seagate Medalist Pro) I has error 02h drive not ready.

Is this a hardware failure or software/firmware? the system see's it and it spins up and clicks but I can't verify the media.

When the system starts it is not recognised.

Is there no hope for this drive except the data recovery crew or can I do something with it?
