Hi there!
I have a brand new PIV, 1.6 GHz, 20 GB, with 256 MB RAM, running XP. The machine is only 2 1/2 months old. It doesn't shut down properly. When I choose shut down from the menu and hit OK, it looks like it's shutting down, then it starts back up again..Any thoughts??

If this is a very recent event try using System Restore to get back to when it did Shut Down correctly. If not have a look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base article "Windows XP Restarts When You Try to Shut Down Your Computer (Q311806)"

I've been having problems shutting down myself due to some sort of conflict between my SpeedStream 3060 PCI internal DSL modem and ZoneAlarm. If using only Win XP's firewall, there's no problem, but instead of using that firewall and using ZoneAlarm therein lies the problem. On shutting down, my system will lock on SAVING FILES AND SETTINGS, but I have found out that prior to shutting down if I disconnect my connection and shutdown ZoneAlarm it will shut down but with two ending program messages...nonetheless, it shuts down. One other problem is my connection icon doesn't disappear upon disconnection nor can I reconnect. Unfortunately it is a problem getting ZoneAlarm and SpeedStream to resolve this problem.

Seanpmi - I had exactly the same problem under Win2k Pro when I switched over to ADSL (using a Dynalink PCI ADSL modem) in that Win2k wouldn't shut down anymore beacuse of Zonealarm. I ended up going and buying Norton's internet security suite (needed a new virus scanner too) which has the personal firewall in it.

Works fine now!

leda,

Couple Knowledge Base articles may help:

all the above are corect on helping XP shut down correctly. and if u installed EZCD5 w/ Direct CD. it will never shut down correctly. unless u tottally Remove EZCD5 with add/remove. then clean the registery. the XP will shut down correctly. when u install EZCD5.x use custom, do not install Direct CD or Take two. the check the shut down. I removed Zone Alarm... install Tiny FireWall, use EZCD5.02, with Nortons AV 2002. shut down is just 1 min 45 sec. Frank Smith

Another idea, if the computer continues to do this. If you are on a network, go into BIOS and disable Wake-On-LAN.

I had the exact same problem. I found out that if all drivers are not current then xp will not shut down. The first place to check is windows update and it will show some new drivers and automatically update them for you.

This problem sometimes repeats it self when I load new progams. I either check again with update or go to the manufacturer web sight and up date drivers for xp. This has always solved my shut down problems so far.
hope this helps

I had the same problem. Blue screen just before final shutdown and then machine started up again. I downloaded the XP update from Roxio cd creator website and this cured it.

I never knew about hte network wake up on lan. but XP is really serious about BAD DRIVERS.. and Roxio send a bunch of them... MS send patches for the mess that Roxio made of there XP drivers. But right now i am using Roxio ezcd 5.1 and it solves all the Roxio errors in XP.
PS: adaptec 4.0 will install and work fine. simply forget the not compatibility issue, and install using custom and DO NOT INSTALL DIRECT CD. then upgrade to 4.o5. and it simply works GREAT.
