I'm interested in finding out what exactly the web view for WinXP relies on, whether it's just those couple files in the %systemroot%\WEB folder, or other files.

I personally don't have XP, but I have Win98SE, and was wondering if anyone of you with XP, would be willing to give me a copy of the WEB folder, to see just how it ticks.

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can afford me. If you sting me, I won't mind.

The whole XP "look" is controlled by what's in the c:\windows\web folder.
Themes support is gone (at least in my beta), but one can manually change the look by editing files.
As for a copy of the folder...that would be illegal. :D Cheers,
Jim

Care to make an exception?

Or, Know anyone who'd make an exception?

It's in the pursuit of knowledge. :D If you sting me, I won't mind.

ok. i have xp now. scrap the web view request.

what i want now is a copy of the beta 1 visual style, called whistler or professional.

i know how ms makes the visual styles and am contemplating making a couple myself, but based on old windows appearences.

can someone PLEASE get me a copy of the beta 1 visual style?

i will be eternally grateful. If you sting me, I won't mind.

Check out Also: check out Resource Hacker (ResHacker) and investigate browseui.dll and shell.dll
XP sidebars appear to be reliant on XML, of all things! I have to wonder if they didn't get that idea from Netscape, and I don't care what anyone else says, I kinda like the little dog ;)

Web View for folders im XP is a VERY elusive matter, however: desktop.ini has a PersistMoniker= line that shows much potential, and I have personally had -some- success with using a folder.htt file.

In order to get at all folders, however, that would involve editing the HTT resources in BROWSEUI.DLL or SHELL.DLL (I forget which; both are fascinating studies!)

It might also be helpful to get in contact with the author of RegXPlor (Registry Explorer), who has created a DLL that, when registered (as in regsvr32), sets up a system folder and binds its web view to resources within that DLL. Also of interest, CHM files appear to be compiled HTML or even (differentiated) MHT files that refer to resources within the same CHM file for images and links.

As you have probably deduced, this is an exploration that has become an obsession. Hopefully, some other programmers or technical users will benefit from my psychoses.
