Office Setup
VPN Server Machine OS: Windows XP Pro
Broadband Connection: DSL
Network: Workgroup with a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 98 Machines

Home Setup:
VPN Client Machine OS: Windows XP Pro
Broadband Connection: Cable Modem
Network: Not applicable.

I have setup the VPN and am able to connect and even map a drive to the windows 98 machine at the office however when I try to copy a file that is about 65 Megs it tells me its going to take 30 minutes however it never completes and disconnects. I am able to transfer small files with no problems. I have checked the vpn idle timeout etc and made it 2 hours. I changed the MTU settings on the home machine. Any ideas as to how I can get this to work. I don't want to use any software like pc anywhere etc. I am thinking of setting up a FTP server but I would really like to know how to get it to work via VPN with just normal browsing/copy/paste. Thanks

Hi Vikk12.

This probably won't help you, but in our case, as soon as we changed our network to an AD, we noticed a peculiar problem. Just to give some background - our VPN is on a windows 2000 server SP4, using Radias to an AD. Windows 2000 and XP home/pro remote workstations work like a charm, but Windows ME, 98 etc were totally useless after they signed on. We never did figure out the problem, and were fortunate enough to just request all remote users must be Windows 2000 and above to connect with us...

Good luck.

Hi, my vpn works just fine but when I try to transfer a file even from the windows xp pro box that I have setup as a vpn server after some time it disconnects the connection. I have no problem transferring small files but its the larger files above 30-40 megs that this happens on. Has anyone faced this problem and if so can you recommend how to fix this. I took a sniffer trace of it and I see that the vpn server is requesting the session be closed. Also prior to this there are messages from the server machine like PPP: LCP Terminate ACK to which the home machine replies back with a Call Clear Request message and than after that the packet says "PPTP: CTRL Message Type=0094 (Call-Disconnect- Notify)to which the client (my home machine) reply's back with a Ctrl message Type=0010. The wierd thing is after they exchange these messages I see that my home machine is acking a packet that has not been sent yet. It is sent in the next frame. I can tell by the sequence #. Anyone have any ideas. Please help.

I had a problem where my IPSec VPN would connect for a while and work fine then disconnect. Turned out that my old NetGear firewall/router did not support VPN pass-through. I opened inbound ports 50 and 500 and have not had a problem since. Under these circumstances a small file would have time to successfully copy but a large file would not. (thought I'd share in case that is of help.)
