Windows XP Professional Shutdown?

Is there an issue in XP similar to the Win98 shutdown issue? I have an IBM PC300 GL PIII machine running XP that is hard-locking at shutdown.

Also, at times during startup, the machine will hang at the "welcome to windows XP" screen. This one isn't a hard lock because if I do a ctrl-alt-del the desktop comes up. Sometimes task manager comes up as well, but not always.

IBM tells me that the original BIOS on that model doesn't supposrt XP, but didn't think that was my issue.

Help me Tek-Tips Windows XP Forum...you're my only hope.
(apart from low level formatting and starting over)

Hi,

Have you already tried going to run>msconfig and turning off everything that loads at startup?

Here's how it went:

THe customer was origianlly running Win98. They had a virus, we cleaned it and sold them NAV2K2. They worked fine for awhile, but they just recently (last week or so) started having lockups in Office programs (and, frankly many other random places I think they neglected to inform me of). I checked their registry to see if there was anything suspicious. Gator was loaded, as was "Offercompanion" and some other addware crap. I found a logitech mouse driver loading in the run section. I did some research and microsoft referrenced this driver as related to random lockups and other problems. I found the program in "Add/Remove Programs" and deleted it. Then I removed the "lmouse.exe" from the run section. When I rebooted, the machine booted to a blue screen. "An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C001539A in VXD --- called from 0028:C005976E in VXD ---". I couldn't get past that. If I tried to boot into safe mode, the machine would do a loop (it would almost load windows then reboot itself).
I figured this to be an OS problem, so I tried to reload Win98. The version of 98 that came preloaded and the OEM version that came with the machine were different so I couldn't install over. The customer decided to buy XP upgrade. I upgraded the machine and spent some time reinstalling apps because the upgrade really wasn't an upgrade. It was more like replacing 98 with XP. Finally got that whole mess ironed out. That was where I started having the lockups shutting down and the hangups booting up.
I called IBM and they suggested backing up data, low level formatting and starting over with a fresh drive.

What I want is a quicker resolution that will keep the owner of the pc (who is the mayor of one of the biggest speed traps in the country) from yelling at me again :)

What you describe is symptomatic of driver conflicts and heat issues. Could also be bad RAM. With a PIII, I would be mildly surprised if it was heat - but wouldn't rule it out. I doubt very much that the BIOS is incompatible - I've never heard of that.

Only way to know for sure is a fresh build, inserting the hardware components one at a time after you've installed XP, then testing. Then install software one piece at a time and test.

Once you have a solidly running machine, burn an image to CD. Then, if it goes wrong again, re-image it.

I hope this is at least a bit helpful. CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

This site is a good source of information on XP shutdown problems. A most frequent reason for start or shutdown problems seems to be CD Burning software.

What did the Compatibility Wizard have to say about this setup?

linney,
Thank you for pointing me to this thread: I usually let my machine run all the time, hense, I didn't realize I had this problem until the other day. As it turns out the problem was because of my "Lexar Card Reader" and the sausb.sys file. Problem now solved, thanks.
