I turned on my win xp pro computer and it shows the win xp logo but WILL not load up the rest of the system. The display/monitor light suddenly changes to orange/amber/deep yellow and it stays that all day. I can do F8 for a Safe Mode bootup. Even when I restored to a previous day, it still will not boot beyond the "winxp display logo". Please help.

Sounds like it is entering SLEEPMODE as soon as it boots up... caused by a shutdown when in Hibernation...

try to CLEAR CMOS, then upon reboot go into the BIOS setup and load DEFAULT VALUES, EXIT and SAVE... and see if that helps...

Thanks Ben,

Please help to direct me on how to perform the CLEAR CMOS and go into the BIOS setup and load DEFAULT VALUES. CAN do these things in SAFE MODE? Thanks again.

hi blitz,

firstly no you cannot do these things in safe mode im affraid you have to do them from the bios (small memory with the hardware configs situated on the main board)
it would probably help you if you have the main board manula (if you built the system yourself you will certainly have it, if not you may not)

if you have, then it will clearly show you where the headers are for the cmos, usually 2 (sometime more) pins (usually open). all you do if close them for 30 seconds or so then remove the jumper and your done.

ok if you dont have your mainboard manual, i would suggest you go to the mainboard manufacturers site and downlaod the manual from there. (f you dont know what it is, either run some 3rd party software such as Sisoft sandra 2007 which is free to use, or simply take the side panel off your case and look at the board.

if all else fails, take the side panel off the case (with power off and static free hands) and look closely around the board you should somewhere see a smallish round battery, and very likely close to it, 2 small metal pins sticking up (it may even say clr cmos under the pins)
get yourelf a jumper socket or small screwdriver and carefully short the 2 pins together for about 30 secs.

reboot and imediatley press delete for a couple of seconds, you will then enter the bios of your mainboard.

using the arrow keys, enter and escape to go back, you can anvigate around the bios.
you should see a section that says load failsafe defaults, press enter, and then Y for yes.
go to save and exit bios, press Y again and your system will reboot.

if that doesnt workm boot into safe mode and remove your graphics drivers ( i had an identical problem and it turned out to be my graphics card at fault) after uninstalling them, reboot again
go to the website and download the latest drivers, and install them, reboot and see what happens.

good luck

Some other non-hardware things to look at.

From Safe Mode, try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

XP goes into hibernation on startup
thread779-1395782

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

Something else to look at -

When the monitor changes to amber, does the PC continue to run? or does it appear to go to sleep? (blinking power light etc)

If the machine appears to continue to run, it could be a problem with the video driver/graphics card. Try booting to the startup (F8 menu)and then try booting to VGA mode. Your screen will be reset to the 640x480 resolution, just enough to be able to "see" the desktop. From there, you should be able to reset your video display back to something more usable, or update/reload your video driver.

Something else to consider is the "last known good profile" setting (again from the F8 menu) This will load the last settings that actually worked, if those settings are still available.

Hope this helps,
-IQ
