I attempted to install a Linksys wireless network card onto a laptop (it was working great and able to access the network and internet).

The linksys program installed some configuration utility that caused some massive problems. I have since given up on the wireless card and uninstalled everything but now I am not able to access the internet email or any of the tcp based print servers. I can however access tha LAN drives (we also run IPX protocol)

I assume that the wireless config corrupted the IP stack but I am not able to restore the system (my co-op aide shut off the system restore while working on something and never turned it back on).

I have looked around on the web and found a command line op that is supposted to restore the IP stack but so far it doesn't solve the problem. I have tried Linksys tech support however I just get a recording that says they are really buy and I should call back when they're not. Thanks Linksys you're a big help...NOT.

Can anyone point me down the road to getting my Bosses (yes it had to be his)computer functioning again?????

Have you tried removing Simple TCP/IP functions, rebooting and then reinstalling the service?

XP Pro consideres TCP/IP a critical system resource and so you can not uninstall it. Tried the IP restore command line but no luck.

I am having a shockingly similar problem, except its a linksys wireless PCI card. The card was not working correctly, i reinstalled it and now cannot get anything other than 169.xxx. I have an A7N8X motherboard with 2 other onboard LAN connections, none of which are able to repair. I tried the cable in my laptop and the cable/router are fine. I even tried assigning a static IP/DNS to no avail. I would be grateful for any suggestions

now to figure out a convenient way to get it from my driveless laptop to my networkless desktop :)

For XP, the "by hand" method:

1. Perform a winsock Fix including reinstalling TCP/IP

Reinstall of the TCP/IP protocol to restore Winsock functionality

Step 1: Delete registry keys

A) Open Regedit from the Run line
B) Go to both of the following keys, export each of them, and then delete them:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
C) Restart the computer

NOTE: It is important to restart the computer after deleting the Winsock keys.
Doing so causes the XP operating system to recreate shell entries for those two keys. If this is not done, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP on top of itself

A) Open the properties window of the network connection
B) Click Install
C) Click Protocol, then Add
D) Click Have Disk
E) Type the path to the nettcpip.inf file, for example: c:\windows\inf, and click OK (if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder, it may not show up in the list). You can also do a Start, Search for thus this file.
F) You should now see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list of available protocols. Select it and click OK.
G) Restart the computer

When the computer reboots you will have functional Winsock keys.

NOTE: If the network connection properties contained more than the following three items: Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP, then the additional items may need to be removed in order to restore browsing. If those items are needed they can be reinstalled. The reason for removing them is due to those items placing entries into the Winsock keys and those entries will no longer be there.

Side effects and possible problems:

This method will restore basic functionality to the Winsock keys, but is not a complete rebuild. On a default install of Windows XP the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2\ParametersProtocol_Catalog9\Catalog_Entries - will have 11 sub-keys. When applying this method, the
Catalog_Entries will only have three sub-keys. However, it works and there does not appear to be any side effects. The missing entries relate back to the:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces key.
Also, third-party proxy software or firewalls may need to be reinstalled.

You should be in a position with just this repair to downlod and use the Winsock Repair tool mentioned above, however, to restore all of your registry entries.

Thanks to BCASNER!!!! this is a great little utility. I am tucking this one away into my tool box. Worked like a charm 5 minutes after download I was back in business.

Thanks Again

Matt

dear bcasner,

You are my own personal hero, the wind beneath my wings and the reason that i can now freely waste time on the internet again, if there is ever anythign i can do for you, a reference, my firstborn, just let me know.

Sincerely(well, mostly),
Matt

You are all most welcome.

As I state in my FAQ, (faq779-4625) I know no easier or more reliable way to fix the common issue with the Winsock service.
