Hi all;
I have had issues with my computer not shutting down; START/SHUT DOWN. Have been running AVG 7.5 and occasionally had the problem, now have put AVG 8.0 to update and have had numerous refusals to acknowledge SHUT DOWN command.
Obviously, the bugger does not like me shutting down the power! [But... I AM the boss :>{ ]

Wondering if this is the ANTI-VIRUS taking control to protect itself or if it is another issue?
Help appreciated, thanks...

XP Pro sp-2 (build 2600)

What is happening when you attempt to Shutdown, nothing, or a restart?

Many people have been using AVG Products (including myself) without Shutdown problems, so while it maybe your cause, it may well be another factor too?

Have you got any errors in the Event Viewer?

Can you repeat the problem when logged on as another username?

You could temporarily remove AVG, ans see how you go with another free Antivirus software.

Avira.

Avast.

Linney; thanks for the information. I will dig through it later when I get a chance.

It just sets there IGNORING me... It has to be shut down by turning off the main power switch.

thanks again

Does it happen consistently or just randomly?

Try from Safe Mode if it is always consistently happening. Also what happens if you login to Normal Mode as another user?

If it works OK from Safe Mode then the next step might be along these lines.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Sorry if this is another load of "digging" for you.

It has been intermittent.
Occasionally, like what prompted me to ask the question.. it had to be shut down with power-OFF twice in a row and came back with the white start-up screen. I believe I have tried to start it in the past in safe and normal; neither which would respond.
Was corrected by Acronis re-install of the c-drive copy.

The bugger may work fine now for awhile, or may crap-out when I shut it down today!?!

I checked and I have (9) unsigned drivers installed. Wonder how many ty7pically reside on the 'average' computer?

If my old memory is correct I believe I have had issues in the past then SYSTEM MECHANIC brought up DEVLDR32.EXE as a potential problem?? But, can't recall specifically about that one.

There might be nothing wrong with using the unsigned drivers it is just something to consider in your troubleshooting steps when looking for possible causes.

You have my sympathy as there is nothing harder to troubleshoot than randomly occurring events. They are the sort of things we have to live with until the next format and clean install, or even the next new computer.

What are your system specs? I have had this issue when I had a lower end pc running xp and loaded it up with resource intensive products. (ex: anti-virus software, video editing, picture editing. Etc.)
I've seen it when Xp just will not take a shutdown command because it can't que it.

It could be an application hanging, but typically you will get an End Now option. You could look at Task Manager Process and see which process is hang at the point of shutdown. Trying in safe mode would tell you if its an app or an OS or update issue.

What types of software are you running, I've had everything from Office apps (Outlook)to CS3 apps (Photoshop etc) cause that sort of issue.

Everything will be OK in the end.
If it's not OK, then it's not the end

Here's whay I have:
Operating System
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600) Intel Corporation
Processor a Main Circuit Board
2800 megahertz Intel Pentium 4
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: Intel Corporation D865GBF AAC25843-406
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. BF86510A.86A.0077.P25.0508040031 08/04/2005
1008 Megabytes Installed Memory

I DO have a lot of programs loaded, that is for sure.
[I work over a 45kbps phone link RE: going to get stuff...]

Last night when I went to shut down it ignored me again.
I have a program called ENDITALL. When nothing else would work I got Pi$$#@ and "killed everything". It then shut down correctly.

From that I would think it would be relatively easy to (next time it happens) go into ENDITALL and shut down the applications individually to find the culprit?!

Thanks again all :)

Well that didn't fix it. Individually shutting down the various applications (that could be shut down) didn't do it. KILL ALL did?! and allowed time-out auto shut down.

My system mechanic says the devldr32.exe file is not a legitimate Creative Labs file... what does that mean and how is it corrected?

According to this link there is a known bug in devldr32.exe which may cause Shutdown problems. The solution mentioned seems to be updating Sound Blaster drivers.

What is devldr32.exe? Is devldr32.exe spyware or a virus?

Some more information here, but I haven't read these, you can check them out.

I am running circles and this file is self perpetuating.
Have to admit I am not a computer guru... Any simple way to just KILL the monster ba$t#!@ ?

Yup...it's called format & clean install. Then, add one application/piece of hardware at a time and see which one, if any, triggers the problem. I'm willing to bet that this will be the end of your problems.

Sure that is the answer, but for now it has been folded back to AVG 7.5 and it seems to be OK again. We shall see!

Thanks all
