After removing Spyware on my daughters computer, using the link the virus MBR.exe was sucessfuly removed. However since then the computer freezes after being on for sever minutes. the mouse works but when you try to lock into anything there is no response. The original problem was the same problem that appeared on thread760-1500657. The link to cure virus MBR.exe did do the job.

Need help

Boot into SAFE MODE and then do the following (assuming the same problem doesn't happen in safe mode):

clikc on START RUN type in SFC /SCANNOW
Click OK

This will verify all windows system files in case they have been damaged.

After that, reboot into regular mode and install, update and run MalwareByte's Anti-Malware. Do a FULL SCAN and you can see if any malware is remaining on your system.

Hi goombawaho, I tried the info you sent me, when I went in the safe mode and typed in SFC/SCANNOW, A message came up that said " windows does not support SFC/SCANNOW".
I tried it standard mode and got the same response.

Still have aproblem

You're running Windows XP - correct?

And you're typing it correctly - like this:
SFC (space) /SCANNOW (with 2 Ns)????

I can't find anywhere on the internet that someone has come up with that message relating to SFC. There are certainly other messages that I've seen that pop up, but not that one.

Hi, I missed the space! I'm going over to my daughters and try again. Sorry about that.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW sucessfully, while it was running it asked to insert the windows XP disc, which I did. and
after completion I booted up and ran a Webroot spyware-malware program. It picked up only cookies. When I checked on it ten minutes later I found that the computer was frozen. It seems that after 15 - 20 minutes the computer just freezes, you can move the mouse but it cannot function.

If it runs for several minutes then it sounds like you are over the MBR problem but have struck another one. Perhaps the machine is overheating, is it a laptop?

Does it still freeze in safe mode if you let it sit?? If so, then I would agree with Linney that it may be hardware-related.

Normally windows will just freeze UPON bootup or not even get that far if it's damaged - NOT boot normally and then freeze later, unless something hardware related is wrong.

You could download and burn the Ultimate Boot CD and use the diagnostic utilities on there to check your hardware. There's a memory test, which I would run first, manufacturer hard drive utilities and motherboard/processor tests.

Get it download, boot it up, look at the different menus and then ask more questions.

As a matter of fact, let it sit and run 30 minutes BOOTED UP to the ultimate boot CD and see if the PC freezes in that environment. If so, then hardware is the likely culprit.

It will totally rule out Windows as the cause.

The unit is a Dell Demension E520.It is using windows XP Pro. as the operating system. I have not tried leaving it safe mode for any long period. I'll try that next.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi, I tried it in the safe mode and got the same results. I'm going to bite the bullet and re-install windows XP.

Thanks for all your help.

That won't help you if it's overheating. Better troubleshoot that first or you're wasting your time reloading XP.

Open up the case, turn the computer on and check that the CPU fan is running. Take the computer outside and blow it out using a compressed air duster or even better, a yard blower set on low speed. Blow out the power supply air vents, the cpu fan and cpu heat sink plus any other case fan if you have one.
