I install windows xp prof. two days ago, yesterday after a normal shutdown the xp system would not start up. it would get to the black screen with the line going across and then re-boot. I attempted to start in safe mode but same thing happend. I was able to boot from the cd and go into repair but had no clue what to do then. I just ended up reinstalling xp. I had earlyer in the day put a new usb device (card reader) on the computer. any suggestions on what is going on. Also is there a way I could have backed up the system files and just re-coppied them instead of reinstalling xp?

Thanks in advance
Jim Garry

Just out of curiousity did you install XP over any other OS particularly XP home edition.
It won;t work Take control of your life, not someone else's

No this was a clean install on a new harddrive. In addition I attemped to boot from last known good what ever the message is. this did not work either.

Thanks Jim
