Hi:

I have an issue with my Windows XP (Home Edition) booting up correctly. The system boots up fine but after it says that is s loading "Personal Settings", it starts powering down (saving your personal settings, closing connections etc.) and then reboots. It's stays in this loop and doesn't get into to showing the 'desktop'. Has anyone had similar issues? How did you resolve it ?

I've also tried to use the recovery CD but not know what's causing the issue, I couldn't do anything with that.

I also tried to use the original disk - to boot from there and it tried to put another occurance of the operating system on the hard drive (doesn't give me a repair option).

What is the best approach to solve this, given that I would like to save my data on the drive and if possible, keep my settings.

thanks in advance.

Some things for you to look at.
Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?). See what happens if you attempt to logon with another user in Normal Mode.

Logon - Logoff loop, also caused by BlazeFind

logs you on loads personal settings then logs you off?

A second reason can be security policy settings:

Try running ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

Make sure that your repair attempt was done correctly. Repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

"Turns out if you slipstream SATA drivers (or any other) and end up with an unattended install you lose the repair and the recovery consol options".

Have a look at this post (near the end), but the whole post is worth a read too.

Linney:

Thanks for the information. I was able to follow some Microsoft instructions to delete some of the configuration files (security, software, and others) and re-copied them from a backup location. This worked fine and the looping stopped. The problem I am encountering now is, after I sign in as 'administrator', Windows quickly flashes the next screen (with the task bar) which is quickly followed by the background screen. That is as far as it goes. It's stuck there and doesn't move forward.

I tried 'alt+ctrl+del" and was able to bring un the 'Task Manager'. I wanted to see what was running. IE.EXE is not on the list of processes running. Is there something I need to do (recopy another file) which tells the system to envoke IE ? Is there an INIT file which could be missing or corrupted ? Thanks for you assistance.

You could try typing Explorer in the Task Manager's File/ New Task/ Open box.

But the fact that you have to try something like that doesn't bode well for you. You may have half fixed the problem, but have not really addressed what the actual cause was, possibly a malware infection.

See if you can get it to run some programs, if you can, then use the Guided Help .exe file to repeat the steps from your effort above. This does it all automatically for you, but you need a functioning machine to run it on.

The pessimist in me thinks you'll be doing the next link, probably. The good news is that I am often wrong in such matters.

You will, even after that, have to ensure you are clean of malware.
