Looking for some help with my home network setup.

I trying to run a small two computer network using the SMC ADSL Barricade Router SMC7401BRA. I have no problem connecting to the internet from both computers. But neither computer can see each other on a local network.

My configuration is as follows:

1. Computer running Windows XP Professional
1. Computer running Windows Me
1. SMC EtherEZ Hub 3608T-EZ
1. SMC ADSL Barricade Router SMC7401BRA

Both of my computers are connected to the SMC ADSL Barricade Router SMC7401BRA via the SMC EtherEZ Hub 3608T-EZ. As I stated above, both can access the internet with no problem. I ran the Windows XP Network Wizard on both computers but still cannot see each other. I looked all through the manual that I downloaded from the SMC-Europe website for the SMC ADSL Barricade Router SMC7401BRA and as far as I can see everything is set up correctly. I have tried to ping each computer directly and can not connect.

The setup on my Windows XP computer is as follows:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.33
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The setup on my Wndows Me computer is as follows:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

I do not have DHCP enabled in the WAN configuration settings of the Barricade Router, should I? If I should, what should I use for the host name?

When I run the diagnostic test from withing the Barricade Router configuration utility, everything passes.

I am really confused, I am sure that the problem lies with some type of configuration error within the Barricade Router or Windows XP settings. Any assistance in solving this problem is greatly appreciated.

swashbuckler - there's something odd going on here. You have the router (apparently) acting as DHCP server, and all 3 machines set to pick up IP address automatically. Then 2 machines pick up a 192.168.2.x number (expected) - BUT the hub connected machine picks up your external (ISP supplied) IP address (which should be assigned to your router). So, I'm just wondering - presumably your router must be configured to do this? You are sure the ADSL line is not connected to the hub? You mention all ports being blocked if connected through router - do you mean you need an external IP address to run software/games?

netbios over tcp/ip setting - go to properties of LAN connection, TCP/IP, advanced, WINS tab. Its generally best left as default that windows gives it depending on how you configure IP addresses (manually or DHCP)

the aDSL is not directly connected to the hub, the line goes to the router first and then to the hub.

Lets say even if i were to get rid of the hub, and hook mine into the router, so we have all 3 computers in the router, i still can't transfer files, or ping any of the computers with any computers, thats the real prob....wolluf

wait, the aDSL is directly connected to the hub, then the hub connects to my computer (winxp) and then it connects to the router which connects to the 2 other comps

sorry for the mistake i made...
i updated the diagram

swashbuckler - bcastner has given you some advice on how to configure all three machines attached to the router in your other thread. If you haven't already, I'd suggest you try out what he says.

PS. There really shouldn't be a problem here - 3 machines sharing an ADSL connection via a router is a very common Home network configuration. The XP machines especially should already be configured ok by default. 98 one need to check the network bits are installed and configured. And you need to share resources on all machines.
btw - I don't think you've said - where does your internet connection work currently? (would think on the hubXP machine and not on the others - but you haven't said).

unless already posted (which it probably has been)

1) Disconnect everything from everything else
2) Connect DSL to WAN port on router
3) If you have a 4 port hub built into the router then plug everything into there however if you only have one lan port plug hub into the lan port on the router, plug pc's into hub
