Windows XP machine will not see any computers on My Network Places

Hi,

I have a Windows XP computer connected to a workgroup of 9 computers. The other computers are a variety of Windows 2000, XP and 98. They can all see each other through their respective Network Neighbourhoods, My Network Places, Computers near me etc.

I can map the new XP machine to the other computers by mapping its IP address from other computers and all that stuff but I cannot see other computers in the new XP machines "My Network Places". I mapped all the other computers IP addresses onto the new machine and can access them that way but I would like to have them come up on My NetWork Places.

Any ideas?

Check to see if the new computer is joined to the same workgroup as the others. Take a look at the network properties of one of the xp's that works and compair it to the one that does not.

Look at TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, WINS tab, uncheck us LMHOSTS, click to enable "Netbios over TYCP/IP"

O.K Franklin I checked all the properties and the only difference was the preferred DNS server numbers. I changed these to the same as the other computers but still no luck. I still cannot see any computers in My Network Places.

I tried enabling the Netbios over TCP/IP but still no luck. I still cannot see the other computers in the workgroup on My Network Computers and the other computers still cannot access the New Machine through their own My Network Places, Network Neighbourhood etc. I can only still access the machine through mapping its IP address from the other stations.

Try,
In MS-DOS prompt type ipconfig/all and press return, record on paper what settings are what, then go and try the same exercise on a machine which has no problems with the network and see if there is any difference in settings.

Hope this helps.

Check to see if the Internet Connection Firewall is enabled on the network connection, if it is disable it.
On a domain this stops PC fromseeing each other, not sure on a workgroup.
Worth a go??

You might want to make sure your Computer Browser service is Enabled.

Also, it can take a long time (up to 2 hours) before your computer appears in network neighborhood. Don't be too quick to dismiss that you may have solved your problem with any of the previous posts.
