windows xp / linksys wireless network beginner problem

I have a notebook that is working great with a linksys BEFW11S4 (4 port + wireless router) and a cable modem. The problem is getting the desktop on this little network to be able to join in the fun. Symptoms: No pings going through, but I can renew and release ipconfig at command prompt. Where have I gone wrong?

Any suggestions about what to look for next? I have been at this for hours now...

Are the workgroup names the same? How about the ssid's?

The workgroup name is MHOME on both desktop and notebook. I don't know where to look for an SSID on the desktop system - I found it on the laptop...

If you setup your wireless router for DHCP, then your desktop should be receiving a IP from the router. Most likely in the default 192.168.1.x range. What is your IP address at your desktop? Your desktop is not wireless so there is no SSID.

Can you ping your router? (192.168.1.1) Your Network card on your desktop does not have a physical address? Do you have a cable running from the router to your desktop or from your cable modem to your desktop? See if you can ping your DNS server also. (204.127.198.4)

The desktop card does have a physical address - it just didn't make it to the message (let me know if you would like to know the physical address).
Ping of router and dns server comes back as 'request timed out'.
The cables are running from the cable modem to the router and from the router to the desktop...

Did you hard code the 192.168.1.100 or did you receive that from your router? Do you have a green link light on your network card? Try ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to see if you get a ip again.

Is the xp firewall enabled on the desktop?The addresses you posted show that the pc is getting an ip from the router, so if it wont get to the internet, look at reinstalling tcp/ip to do so on xp uncheck tcp/ip in the local area's properties reboot recheck tcp/ip and reboot.

The ip is generated from DHCP. Green light on the network card. I've tried the release/ renew ip a few times, will try it again. thanks for you help

p.s. I have checked all firewall software on this machine, all disabled..

If you're running XP have you downloaded SP1? This will solve some networking issues.

Do you know where to download SP1 so that I can save it on the laptop and then burn it on a cd to install on the desktop, as the desktop can't get to the internet to download it at the moment..
