windows XP Installation

Hi,

Can anybody please help me with an upgrade problem; I have a PC, which I want to upgrade from Wins ME to Wins XP, the specification is as follows:

200 megahertz AMD K6

128 Megabytes Installed Memory

4.29 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity

Board: Apricot Computers Limited 12408231 1.00.01
Bus Clock: 66 megahertz
BIOS: IBM af20013US 04/06/98

SONY CD-ROM CDU311

ATI Rage/Rage II PCI (ati_m64) [Display adapter]

I have tried numerous ways of installing XP, such as installing it from the CD, and even from the hard drive, the XP files install from the normal installation screen and you can even see the files installing from the prompt ‘Copying Installation Files’, at the ‘preparing installation stage’, this all takes place without any problems at all.

After the above the PC then restarts, the PC goes into Windows XP set-up, and a black screen appears, and the message ‘Starting windows set-up’ appears on the bottom of the screen, with a white line which goes across the bottom of the screen from the left, after the line has reached the right hand side of the screen, the PC hangs, and there is no activity from the PC at all.

I have even taken out the old modem and network card, and the same above occurs.

I know that parts of this PC is below the recommended specification for XP, but I know some people who have this installed on lower specifications without any problems.

I do apologise that this message is so long.

I would appreciate any advice on this matter, as I don’t want to purchase a new PC, and I’m not happy with Wins ME.

As much as I hate to say it, your system simply is NOT going to handle XP..

Did you run the XP Advisor before trying the install to see just how far below the minimum specs your system was??

Have you tried with another media?

you should have atleast 256mb ram. A bigger hard drive is also advisable, otherwise it will run as slow as london traffic! Might be able to get a cheap upgrade processor as well!
Is there any virus protection enabled in the bios? This may cause the installation to hang, perhaps?

I've done it on machines that don't meet spec.
Put the hard drive in a computer that can handle it. Install XP, then move the drive back.
If you don't get a successful boot, run a repair over top.
