Windows XP hows less memory 1

Why is it that after installing 512mb ram, Windows shows only 480mb? This is a new pc I just set up without any apps on it whatsoever. My BIOS shows a full 512mb ram.
 
Are you using an integrated grpahics card? The RAM you are not seeing is probably allocated to the graphics card.

Yes I am using the built in video.So, if I use an AGP card instead, would it show my full 512mb?
 
Yes add-on video cards have their own memory. Even better than AGP is if your board has PCIe (PCI Express) slots. I would get a PCIe graphics card over the AGP, as PCIe offers better performance than the AGP.

Yep, that's right. Here, your integrated video is using up 32MB which accounts for the missing memory. 32, 64 and 128 are the common numbers to be aware of when you notice RAM is missing.
