know this is the pro forum but cant find anywhere to put my question, i keep having in windows XP , my system go up to 99% which grinds everything to a halt, my first thought was virus , and have run many virus checkers all coming up blank.

and hte problems keeps coming and going away. i try all different things to get rid of it , but dont know if any of them actually work or this thing simply dissapears by itself to come back and haunt another day

Im running Win XP home Eidition Service Pack 1

Are you able to use Task Manager and indicate which program or service is using 99% CPU?

Are you getting any errors is your Event Viewer?

What is your computer trying to do just prior to the problem happening.

When did you first notice this problem?

What steps have you tried to fix the problem.

Often this type of problem turns out to be a corrupted file or program and you have to solve it by eliminating possible causes one at a time.

Try disabling any unrequired services that are running in background.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I am having a similar problem with XP Home. The problem I believe started following the upgrade to SP1. When I open or even move an avi file the CPU usage goes to 100% and stays that way until I reboot. In the processes area the explorer.exe is running close to 95%. Sometimes I have to reboot a couple of times for the CPU to return to normal.
I have defragemented the drive, run adaware and searched for viruses. I have removed SP1 and reinstalled it with no success. I have made the following registry changes:
I deleted <shellex> in both the avi and mp3. I rechecked the registry and the shellex is not showing. I have tried the script issued at Kellys XP Korner. I have a few friends who are also experiencing the same problem. Any help would be appreciated, this problem is a nuisance. Thank you in advance. Mike

There is mounting evidence that corrupt AVI files can cause this type of problem. This explains it better and offers a possible fix.

I looked at the Black Viper site and he gives two potential solutions. My question is which one solved your problem?
- One solution mentioned was to disable the system restore.
- The other one was to delete the system indexing

I followed both of the solutions recommended at the Black Viper site and still no improvement. With the Windows task manager open and no other applications running and the processes tab open <explorer.exe > cycles about every 2 seconds from 40% to 99%. The update speed is set to normal. The Mem Usage for explorer indicates 28,220K.
The System in the Processes tab cycles from 00 to 45 about every two seconds. The Mem usage for the system is 216K.
These results are following a restart of Windows XP home. I have not opened a mp3 or avi file since the restart and these fluctuations are still occurring.
I have SP1 installed and a 1.4Ghz system with approx 900mb ram.
I have been trying to solve this issue for about 3 weeks and done most things I have read on the newsgroups. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Mike

This program will give you a text file output which you can post here and somebody might be able to recognise any conflicting programs you are running.

Hi on the black viper site i went through all the ten steps on supertweaking windows XP to a T, inlcuding disabling the services as recomended under the safe 95% column,

have to say not only the problem with the 99% thing was solved but also the notice in speed and performance of my machine afterwards was remarkable.

irnocially though i had to plug my laptop in to a clients machine the next day and had to switch most of the services back on to network :-(
