I have a message
Microsoft HTML Help executable has encountered a problem and needs to close and Error signature
AppName: hh.exe AppVer: 5.2.3644.0 ModName: itss.dll

ModVer: 5.2.3644.0 Offset: 0000e438

So I can't read Help. How to fix the problem? I have Windows XP pro.
I reinstalled Help using pchealth.inf file and fixed Registry with an utility that Doug Knox gives. And it helped, but my happiness was premature. When I turn on my computer next day everything return: Help does not work! What do I have to do now?

. Start, Run type in: helpctr -regserver

. The Help and Support center needs access to the internet. Make sure your firewall is not blocking it.

. In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, disable the use of third-party tools.

. A note from Kelly Theriot:

1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your CD-ROM.
2. Browse to your CD-ROM and change the folder to \I386
3. Copy the following files into a temporary folder on your hard disk:

Winhlp32.cn_
Winhlp32.ex_
Winhlp32.hl_

4. Click Start->Run, type CMD and then press Enter.
5. Change to the temporary folder where you stored the Winhlp32 files.
6. Type the following commands:

EXPAND WINHLP32.CN_ WINHLP32.CNT
EXPAND WINHLP32.EX_ WINHLP32.EXE
EXPAND WINHLP32.HL_ WINHLP32.HLP

7. Copy Winhlp32.exe to your \%SYSTEMROOT%\ folder.
8. Copy the Winhlp32.cnt, and Winhlp32.hlp to the \%SYSTEMROOT%\Help\folder.
9. Typically this folder is C:\Windows.
10. Delete the contents of your temporary folder.

Checkpoint: Help and Support Won't Expand

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment. In the right pane, verify that the windir value is REG_EXPAND_SZ and not a REG_SZ type. If not, change it.

Reboot and try again.

Please advise us here again on whether this helped, as there are other approaches.

See if these articles give you any ideas. Removing the HH.dat file has worked for this problem in the past.

Dear bcastner!
I've done almost everything that you advised. Almost because I did not understand the last point of your recipe, I do not know what is the difference between REG_EXPAND_SZ and REG_SZ types. What I've seen in my comp Registry was c:\windows for windir value. So I did not change anything and nothing changed.
Dear linney!
Thank you for your advice! It helped. I deleted hh.dat and now Help works!
Am I right that this file is connected to Microsoft Office XP? When and why does it arise? Is there any chance for the problem to come back?

Basically anything that can go wrong with a computer will occur. What makes it more frustrating is that very often a fix which worked one day might not work the next day. You just never know.

I understand that the hh.dat file stores Help windows position/preferences/favorites type of information and if it gets corrupted Help will become unstable. After deletion a new file is automatically recreated by windows, and this is the basics of your fix.

This article might give you some information on registry keys.
