I have a Sony Vaio 1.8ghz computer runing XP Home. The machine boots up just fine in all modes (VGA, SafeMode, and Regular). I get logged in and after about 5 to 10 minutes the machine locks up. I have reseated the memory, hard drive and other items on the motherboard. I did notice that the mouse port has some malformation to it. The connector had a bent pin which damaged the hole on the motherboard. The machine worked fine for a couple weeks with the port like that. I tried a different mouse and it doesn't work at all and I straightened the pins on the old mouse and it now doesn't work. So I've plugged in a USB mouse. It worked for a while then it started locking up.
Could the damage to the mouse port be causing the system hang?

Thanks in advance
Robert

Does it freeze just once after booting up?

After I click the user to log in as (all users do the same) it will look like everything is ok and then I begin working and it will lock up. I can't do anything. So I have to shut it down by holding the power button in. Then I power it up again and the same thing occurs.

Connect the USB mouse to a different port, and make sure all cards are fully seated and all connections are secure.

If no luck, then see if disabling the PS/2 mouse port in Device Manager helps.

If no good, then use Memtest-86 to test the memory.

If ok, then check for overheating.

Also, make sure that nothing is overclocked, and only default BIOS settings are used.

I tried the mouse in a different USB port. Same problem. I'll try disabling the port in Device Manager and possibly on the BIOS.
I'll also try the memtest 86
How can I check for overheating? It doesn't seem to be hot to the touch. Is there some other way I can test for that?
I'm pretty sure nothing is overclocked. I reset the BIOS to default settings.

Thanks for your input.

I did check the system temps and the They were running around 75 F and 95 F. I can't remember which was running at what temp. It seems high though. I'll check it again tonight.

Also how can you tell the temp on the AIDA download.

Thanks for the info that download will come in very handy.

When I ran the memtest 86 the system hung after about 5 minutes of running. So that tells me that it's more than likely a hardware issue. I just wish I could tell what piece is bad. I'm going to reseat all of the devices tonight and see if I can get any farther with it.

The system temp is normally lower than that of the CPU.
95 F is 35 C, and 75 F is 24 C, both of which are excellent, even if the system is just idling.

You can find the temps in AIDA32 by clicking on the + next to Computer, and then click Sensor.

Another way to tell if overheating is the cause is to remove the computer's cover, and run an external fan.
