Can the backup utility included in xp backup directly to a cd writer? All I see on mskb is references to tape.

I have never used it but imagine it to be similar to other 9x systems. If it is you can back up to CD-RW disks via the backup program but only as much information as will fit on one CD-RW disk. It will not have disk spanning capabilities.

I can't get the cd-writer to display in the drop down menu of devices to backup to. Oh well, just saved it to the hd and burned it from there. Thanks for the response!

Q. How can I use Windows XP's NTBackup to back up files to CD-RW?

A. XP can write data to CD-RW, but not directly from NTBackup. However, you can place backup files in the XP CD-RW write subsystem's spooler, which effectively writes the data directly to CD-RW. To add files to the spooler, perform the following steps:

Start NTBackup (go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Backup).
Select the Backup tab.
Select the files that you want to back up to CD-RW.
Select File for the type of "Backup destination."
Enter the following file location:

C:\documents and settings\<user name>\Local SettingsApplication Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\Backup.bkf

If you aren't sure what the <user name> variable needs to be, go to a command prompt and type echo %userprofile%
to check your %userprofile% environment setting.
After you specify the location of your files in the CD-RW cache, right-click the "CD write" icon in Windows Explorer and select "Write these files to CD" to write the backup files to CD-RW.

Make sure the size of your backup doesn't exceed the capacity of your storage media.

I can see why you're the top expert in this forum. Thanks alot for the follow-up! The user I'm working w/ isn't too computer literate so this will save him a couple steps. Thanks again!

Figured out how to write directly to a cd writer w/ xp backup program. Format the disk using DLA and xp now sees it as a drive. The problem I'm having now is the backup program hangs for 5-10 min when "looking for backup devices..." I've checked services running and svchost.exe CPU is at 99. It will eventually reach the backup program wizard, but I don't think users will have the patience.

You could also buy a copy of Disk Image Pro 2002 by PowerQuest.
It is IMHO better than Norton Ghost, for several reasons. and will image your harddrive across however many CD-R's or CD-RW's as needed along with creating a "Boot Disk" set so you can install the image on a 'blank' harddrive. "The beauty of the second amendment is, that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson

With the time I've spent working w/ ghost, I think I'll stick w/ it, thanks for the other option. In this case all I want to do is backup a couple folders and be able to replace them individually, in case the user deletes one of them.
