I have put in a new mother board and processor, psu
memory etc. Windows requests activation but
i receive no on screen "installation id", does
this imply that windows can't create the hardware
hash code and that perhaps a key piece of hardware is missing?

any ideas?

Can you sort out your Activation problems by phoning Microsoft as per the last section of this article and wading through all the automatic phone activation options until you get to that elusive live person on the other end of the phone?

How to activate Windows XP

Can you do the normal automatic activation after Setup?

yep , got to the elusive live person,
but on screen where there should be
and installation id to pass to Call Center
it's blank, they can't help, they asked
me to reboot, which makes no difference.

So I assume that there is something wrong with
my pc set up.

I persued this through the microsoft site.

The istallation id is made up from the product key
and a hash key, there is a method GetInstallationId()
which yields nothing on my machine, comes up blank?
i created a script calling this method and it yields
'0'.

I don't know what you've got there, maybe it is something that will never need activating? That is why I wondered what happened if you just tried the activation the old fashioned way at the completion of setup? Do you get prompted to activate? Do you get any error messages going that way?

Another thought is whether you might benefit from any available Bios Update?

hmm hadn't hought about the bios, i'm reading
up on how to generate the hash code, i want to
see if it's creating one in which case i'll move on,
I want to establish if the algorithm (whatever it is)
is actually generating a hash code then i'll know
if it's a hardware issue (maybe).
