I am having problems with my windows 98 software. It will not boot up because it says "error loading gdi.exe re-install windows" well i tried to reinstall windows but my computer would not recognize the disk. I can get MSDOS to pop up but the only command I know(at least that works) is win, and it just results to the asme thing. After the message pops up it just cuts off. Finally, I could get to a computer, I had to write all my reports for this week by hand. Please Help. Thank you in advance.

Did you try booting it up in SAFE MODE to see if you could at least do that? joegz

This may be it...

Error Message: “Error loading GDI.EXE. You must re-install Windows.”

Translation: This error can occur if the Fonts folder (at C:\WINDOWS\Fonts) is moved, renamed, or deleted. The GDI (Graphical Device Interface) then fails when it cannot load fonts for display.

Solution: Two solutions for correcting this problem are: 1) reinstall Windows; or 2) re-create the Fonts folder in the C:\WINDOWS directory and extract the files from the Windows installation CD-ROM. This second procedure is not difficult, but the commands for doing it for each operating system (Win95, Win98, and WinMe) would require more space for explanation than we have. The exact instructions, however, can be found at Microsoft’s support site at

Windows uses gdi.exe to control a stack in memory which keep track of graphical components in Windows. I don't remember how big it actually is but you could always copy it from another machine to yours. I'm running Windows 2000 and the gdi.exe on this os is only 24k so the one from Windows 98 wouldn't be bigger. Just copy it to the windows directory and you'll be fine (if that's really the problem). hold down the f8 key while booting up. then select command prompt. type scanreg /restore. select a previous copy of the registry to load. This might work.

Same as above except, at DOS prompt, enter: scanreg /fix <Enter>
