I am running windows xp pro sp2
Specs: 1.8GHz Athlon
512 Meg RAM
Radeon 9600SE Video
Updated BIOS
All "recommended" updates from microsoft

About 2 weeks back my computer just stopped reading both my CD-ROM and CD-RW. I had installed sp2 about 2 months prior and it was fine. Error message was "Windows successfully loaded drivers for this device but cannot find the device". BIOS found it fine and the connections were fine. I formatted and reinstalled everything including sp2. Now it will only read my CD-ROM but not my CD-RW, I have tried several different configuration options to no avail. I tried booting in safe mode and it always freezes when it gets to c:\windows\system32\drivers\Mup.sys. I don't believe it is sp2 because it worked for awhile before the format. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Can you try a plain old CD Rom drive? You may be fighting more than one problem.

Yes, it boots great with the CD-ROM but freezes with the CD-RW, when the BIOS is booting, I can open and close the CD-RW so I assume it at least minimally functions. Also bcastner that link wont come up (web page unavailible)
