Hi

I've recently done a fresh install of xp pro(withsp1 integrated,new disk)

I've been on the windows update site...selected the automatic mode (where it scans for previous installed updates).

It reported 17 critical updates...which of course I wanted to install...But I actually wanted to save the updates to my hard drive and run them from there.(so that I don't have to d/load them again in future)

All it says after the "review and install" is "install now"...which I had no choice but to do.

It didn't give me a choice to save to drive...can this not be done...?

I've also been reading up on this "autopatcher"...If I was to use this ,would it also scan for previously installed updates and just install new ones that are needed...?

Thanks.

There are quite a few versions of operating systems ie

windows xp professional sp1
windows xp professional rtm
windows xp rtm
windows xp sp1

Which one is the right one...? what is "rtm"...?

Thanks.

rtm = release to manufacture

To check which version you have go to "System properties" and if it says you have Service Pack 1 installed then the Windows xp professional sp1 is the right one, if not choose the windows xp professional rtm.
I think windows xp rtm/sp1 relates to the home edition of the OS but i'm not sure.

rtm = Release to Manufacturing
It is the original release of XP after all betas.

Might as well make use of this to speed up any installs.

"The Windows Security Update CD will be shipped to you free of charge. This CD includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003 and information to help you protect your PC. In addition, you will also receive a 12 month free antivirus and firewall trial software CD."

Thanks for the info...one last question on this topic though ...

As far as I know, the Windows Catalog is limited to displaying all updates available, ie. it won't strip what you already got. I'm having to run the Windows Update checker, write down the numbers and then download those from the Windows Catalog site -- a real hassle.

Is there no other way...?
Thanks.
