Hi Folks,

I have a number of PC's doing the same thing with Windows update. For all other websites, IE uses the proxy settings and gateway settings assigned by DHCP, but for Windows update it tries to bypass and go directly through the Network Gateway rather than the proxy.

This is most annoying as I can't get the machines to update as the firewall is correctly telling the PC's to sodd off and talk to the proxy.

Is there a registry setting in IE or WU to tell it to use the network gateway? The confusing part is that the network gateway is not even listed in the connection info when I use ipconfig /all, only the proxy gateway.

I'm lost so your help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Pete

Automatic Windows Update silently does not update if you have a non-transparent web proxy between you and the Windows Update site. This is because AWU does not take account of any proxy settings which may be required, so it fails to connect to the update server. It doesn't log the failed attempt.

Running 'Windows Update' manually works because it runs within IE, and hence uses IE's proxy settings.

The only workarounds I know of:

. Install a SUS server. Using SUS to push updates will respect the proxy settings;

. Install a transparent proxy between Automatic Windows Update and the non-transparent proxy;

. A suggested workaround can be found here:

Bcastner you are a legend. I am now able to update normally and the firewall is not logging masses of rejections.

I ran the workaround in the link you provided and it worked a treat. Now to do it on the 40 odd remaining XP boxes...

Cheers,

Pete
