Windows unable to browse after connecting to net

Hey all,
I work as a tech and in the last month or so, I've started to encounter several computers with internet problems. They all connect to the web without any problems, but once you;ve connected, they can't browse to any websites.
The affected systems seem to be Win9X family, and I've tried all sorts of things, from reinstalling drivers, recreating the dialup connections, resetting IE security settings. I think I've tried updating the browser too. They've only started appearing here recently and I hadn't seen anything like that previously. But the modems DO work - if you run a recovery on the systems, then they work fine, so it's definitly software problems. No viruses on the systems either, but whether anything had been removed beforehand I don't know.

Any ideas / solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Can the machines sucessfully ping websites?

Also, what flavor of IE is the problem? Consistently on version? All the same OS? (If you're trying to cram 6.0 on a 95 box,forget it...)

Doesn't really seem to matter which version of IE - tried updating. Definitly happens across IE 5, pretty sure I tried IE6 in the past, but didn't make any difference.
The main versions of windows I've had it on is 98 and ME - can't recall offhand any 95 boxes.

Can't remember if you could ping websites or not, but if you try to browse directly to an IP address, it can't do that either.

Do you have your Control Panel / Internet Options / Connection settings to "Automatically detect Settings" ? Also check for TCPIP properties for "Obtain IP Address automatically" and Obtain DNS server automatically". All should be automatic.

Next time one of those systems comes in for repair I'll give that winsock fix a try

IFRs - all settings seemed to be correct. All auto. Reset all web settings too, and all web zone security settings back to default.

WinsockFix will save your butt more times than you have fingers in the future, but it cannot handle an issue in which the native Winsock service is replace by another; there are some browser "hijacks" where this has become more common.

If you are game, run Hijack This! on the problem workstation, and post the results here.
