HP a1640n on startup the little tune is now distorted, as though it has slowed down and become scratchy. Otherwise, the box works fine. So far. Am I headed for a crash, or is this thing fixable?

This has been a known issue since day one in Windows and there is no known fix, at least I don't think there is. It is probably something to do with the myriad of startup programs and processes clambering for CPU processor power all at the same time?

Confirm for us that, "Otherwise, the box works fine", includes the subsequently playing of .WAV files, etc., without distortion, crackles, and at the correct speed, etc...

Confirmed. The only sound that is screwy is the startup sound.

You could disable it via Control Panel/ Sounds and Audio/ Sounds. Look for the Startup Sound.

Assuming subsequent (manual) playing of the Startup wave file is satisfactory, then Linney's comment re "the myriad of startup programs and processes clambering for CPU processor power..." holds good.

How much memory does this machine have? If 256Mb, then you could try doubling it to 512Mb - this might help.

The only other fix is to go check all the programmes and services at Startup, and knock out unwanted/unnecessary ones. Or wipe the hard disk clean and start loading the operating system from scratch. The latter is probably over-the-top, unless you find other problems.

I'd just turn it off even if you managed to fix it, that noise puts my teeth on edge every time I hear it, it's like finger nails down a blackboard!!
