Hi; Before you go ugghhhhh, not another one, I've already done some research about shutdown problems and how to potentially fix them. My question is this though, cause I want to know what I'm getting into before I do any of the fixes. A lot suggest going into various files and enabling and/or disabling certain commands or programs etc., and then attempting to restart the computer. My concern is what happens if in attempting one of these fixes you actually can't restart the computer. Is that possible? And if so, how do I guard against it?
(I know this sounds basic, but before monkeying around I want to know what I'm getting into - I've been burned by doing "simple fixes" before.

Thanks
Pat

It is always possible. Best to have a copy of the registry files available to put back in place and an emergency boot disk that you can use to restore them. And if there are any files to be changed it probably would be best to have a copy of the original in a parallel location so you know where it is or where it goes.
And document, document,document. If you don't remember what you did, you won't be able to undo it.

Hi;
Sorry it's taken a few days to resposnd, but thanks "edfair". I've tried a few easy fixes (which haven't worked yet), but I'm not too worried though. When I do I'll certainly heed your advice! I do have 2 further questions that I'll post here instead of a new thread since they're still about startup and shutdown.
1) Just before shutting down, I get an "illegal operation" message, and "vsmon" is in the upper left hand corner. A simple click closes the box, and shutdown continues. A minor incovenience, but it concerns me that it might be a symptom of a bigger problem.
NOTE. I eventually found out that this file appears to be part of ZoneAlarm (truevector), so I thought I'd uninstal ZA, and do a fresh install. I couldn't boot up after.... So any suggestions of rectifying?

2)My second question is this - How can you stop programs like MSN from starting and running? I can disable in configsys, and with other startup programs, but it and others like them weasle their way back in?

Thanks again!

Pat

Start/Run/MSCONFIG/STARTUP

Remove check mark from those you are having problems with.

Thanks;
I've tried that in both MSCONFIG and with a startup manager as well. In fact I've "deleted" the the program in the manager. But when my son uses the program (MSN) it re-establishes itself in the startup menu. Same with a realplayer update exe.
Cheers!
